The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy related causes than white women. With the majority of PHA residents being Black, Indigenous, or people of color, PHAs understand they play a critical role in addressing racial inequities through increased focus on maternal health. This plenary, announced as part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Maternal Health Call to Action, will discuss the role of PHAs in supporting the health and well-being of their residents.

Long before the pandemic forced virtual learning and digital connections, public housing authorities have been working to address unequal access to the internet and devices. Recent provisions in COVID-19 relief packages have begun to provide for temporary assistance for low-income individuals and families, and PHAs and legislators are pushing for more permanent supports. A landmark National Academies of Sciences report commissioned by Congress concludes that childhood poverty in the U.S. could be cut in half within a decade with appropriate action. The report culls through the existing evidence-base to identify the most impactful existing policies including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and housing assistance. This panel will also discuss promising new policies that if enacted could help reduce poverty such as the child allowance.

Mold. Leaks. Rodents. Crime. These are just some of the things the nation's 2 million public housing residents have to worry about. Many of the buildings they live in have been falling into disrepair for decades. Public housing officials estimate that it would cost $50 billion to fix them up. But the Trump administration wants to eliminate the federal fund now used to repair public housing in favor of attracting more private investment to fix up and replace it.

Now colleges and universities themselves are pulling together more permanent solutions, often in collaboration with local housing authorities and non-profit partners. In some cases, colleges and universities are trying to avoid losing enrollment; not surprisingly, students in unstable living environments or who can't afford food have poorer physical health, symptoms of depression and psychological stress, and are more likely to drop out, research shows.
