Dear Colleague,

Communities across the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading Network have taken on chronic absence with many making great strides in the early years through public awareness campaigns, data tracking efforts, community partnerships and other promising strategies. Several communities have already made measurable progress, joining the ranks of GLR Pacesetter communities for their ability to show positive impact. As we look at their efforts and the progress they are making, we are learning that it is not enough to help communities make change; we must also help them sustain change.

Please join me and a group of local GLR coalition funders and leaders as we explore the need for communities to work together over time to address the barriers and solve the problems that keep students from attending regularly. The panel, which includes Beth Duda of the Patterson Foundation, Dawn Gerundo of the Valley of the Sun United Way and Jim MacDonald of the United Way of Greater Kansas City, will examine the role of peer learning networks and how they sustain a positive, problem-solving approach to improving attendance.

I look forward to engaging our colleagues and learning from a handful of GLR communities in a challenging yet exciting conversation about what makes a difference and what can help sustain our efforts.  I hope you will join us!
