The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy related causes than white women. With the majority of PHA residents being Black, Indigenous, or people of color, PHAs understand they play a critical role in addressing racial inequities through increased focus on maternal health. Long before the pandemic forced virtual learning and digital connections, public housing authorities have been working to address unequal access to the internet and devices. Recent provisions in COVID-19 relief packages have begun to provide for temporary assistance for low-income individuals and families, and PHAs and legislators are pushing for more permanent supports. A landmark National Academies of Sciences report commissioned by Congress concludes that childhood poverty in the U.S. could be cut in half within a decade with appropriate action. The report culls through the existing evidence-base to identify the most impactful existing policies including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and housing assistance.
