The U.S. Congress is currently engaged in serious discussions about rewriting the Higher Education Act. Join the Center for American Progress for a keynote address by Sen. Patty Murray (D) of Washington, the ranking member of the Senate committee working on the legislation, about her vision and principles for reauthorizing the Higher Education Act.

It has been a decade since Congress last reauthorized the main federal law on higher education. In that time, college prices have risen by 24 percent in real terms; total student loan debt has exceeded $1.5 trillion; and the United States still faces pressing gaps in access and college completion by race and ethnicity and income.

Following Sen. Murray’s remarks, an expert panel will discuss key issues of higher education reform and challenges moving forward.
